University of Hawaii – John A. Burns School of Medicine The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) complex is a two-phase, $150 million project. The JABSOM complex is designed as a low-rise complex of buildings on 9.1 acres adjacent to the Kaka’ako waterfront park on Oahu. Two of the four building in first phase utilize precast concrete components. These buildings include an Education/Administration Building and a Biomedical Research Building. The Education/Administration Building is a four-story, 182,000 square foot structure that houses education and office/administrative facilities. The Research Building is a four-story, 173,000 square foot structure that houses laboratories and vibration-sensitive equipment. The precast floor system is designed to accommodate the vibration-sensitive requirements.

Load-bearing architectural precast concrete window-box panels provide the primary lateral and vertical load-resisting system to withstand gravity, wind, and seismic loads for these two phase-one buildings. The project features an internal precast concrete frame, comprising double-tees, inverted tees, and columns.

The interior and exterior design is threaded together with the story of ancient Hawaiian healing wisdom. Images and symbols of healing plants, ancient healing gods and nature are woven throughout. This sophisticated, contemporary building provides a welcoming, state-of-the-art facility for teaching, research and administrative functions.
